S-Bahn Berlin – 100 Years in Motion

The Challenge

To celebrate the anniversary of the Berlin S-Bahn, the campaign aimed to take viewers on a visual journey through the railway’s history, spanning more than a century. The challenge was to blend past and present into a single, cohesive visual experience while maintaining historical authenticity and cinematic quality. The project required extensive on-set supervision and a post-production approach capable of recreating multiple time periods using modern visual effects techniques.

Our Goals

The goal was to create a film that honors the legacy of the S-Bahn while presenting it in a visually engaging and contemporary way. The visuals needed to feel immersive and emotionally resonant, allowing viewers to experience the evolution of the railway system across different eras. From a technical perspective, the project also aimed to demonstrate how high-end VFX and compositing can support historical storytelling without distracting from the narrative.

The Creative Approach

Our creative approach focused on visual continuity across time. By combining carefully planned live-action footage with digital environments, we created seamless transitions between historical periods. 3D elements and matte paintings were used to reconstruct past versions of stations, trains, and urban landscapes. Each era was treated with its own visual tone while remaining part of a unified cinematic language.

Team Behind The Scenes

Our team traveled to Berlin to provide on-set VFX supervision during filming. This ensured that camera movement, lighting, and set elements were captured with post-production in mind, allowing for smoother integration of digital elements later in the process. Close collaboration between on-set and post-production teams was essential to maintain consistency and visual realism throughout the project.

Their combined vision and dedication brought this ambitious project to life, with every frame reflecting VYZN’s belief that cinema is the ultimate language of storytelling.

This included complex compositing, 3D animation, matte painting, and environment extensions that helped recreate different historical moments of the S-Bahn. Every shot was carefully crafted to blend live-action footage with digital elements in a way that feels natural and believable. The entire visual effects pipeline was handled by our team, from initial concepts to final delivery. The final film successfully transported viewers through the history of the Berlin S-Bahn, combining technical precision with cinematic storytelling. The project stands as a strong example of how VFX and compositing can be used to bring large-scale historical narratives to life. For Deadline Monkey, it represents deep experience in on-set supervision, complex visual effects workflows, and high-end compositing for culturally significant projects.
